Today we’re going to talk about how to connect Asus transformer to external monitor; this is not a rocket science, since the Asus Tablet has a mini-HDMI port. This is a digital port to plug the device to any digital monitor that supports the standards. The mini-HDMI interface appeared in 2006 and today is widely used in many gadgets like digital cameras and tablets.
A general mini-HDMI port looks like this (in Asus Transformer it has a slightly different design, but you will be able to recognize it by the name “HDMI”):
And the cable for it is like this:
So if your monitor or a TV supports the HDMI standard the only thing you need is to use the Asus Transformer HDMI cable or to get some compatible cable; usually it is mini-HDMI to HDMI wire. The regular HDMI port and wire are these:
It is pretty common that your TV or an external monitor have a regular HDMI port, so in the majority of cases you will need to get a wire mini-HDMI to regular HDMI, which is not really difficult. For example, you can get the cable here: High-Speed Mini-HDMI to HDMI Cable.
If your external monitor does not have a HDMI input/output, then there is probably RCA and S-Video. For them you need a separate connection cable: you get a mini-HDMI to regular HDMI, and a HDMI to Composite /S-Video Converter + an S-Video/RCA Cable to plug it to your monitor or TV. To find the HDMI to Composite /S-Video Converter use the same link where you got a mini-HDMI to regular HDMI cable and place a search for it – the converter is also available there in case you need it.
Keep in mind that the fewer “mediums” between your Asus Transformer and an external monitor you have the better image and sound quality you get.
Connect Transformer To External Monitor
1. The first step is to power off your Transformer and the external monitor. Then you connect the Asus Tablet to your monitor (either directly or through the converter). Do not connect HDMI to DVI output because the sound loss and worsening of the image may take place; it is always better to use the same interfaces or use the appropriate converters.
2. Once you connected your devices, power them on; turn on your monitor first, then Asus EEE Pad Transformer 101.
3. Often the external monitor will be identified automatically; it this did not occur, take a look at your display settings: look for second/external monitor configuration.
A note about Asus Transformer HDMI resolution: the resolution will depend on the external monitor resolution output, the quality of the HDMI wire and if you use any of other cables or converters. In the case of direct HDMI connection the resolution will be the best your external monitor can handle; in all other cases it will depend on the quality of the “mediums” as well.
I hope you have found this information useful and now will be able to connect Transformer to external monitor.

hey I have asus transformer and panasonic viera with me. i want to connect them via HDMI cable but nothing is coming up onto the tv. so is there any option in asus transformer to turn on?
Hi, Ashish,
Does your Panasonic Viera (the LCD) specifically state that it supports computers? The problem is that some HDTV’s aren’t built with computer support. Maybe this link will be helpful: http://goo.gl/zDc4X
I’ve got a Viera HD-Ready plasma from 2008 and when connecting the TF101 to the TV via HDMI channels 1 and 2 – nothing happened. No signal, no sound, just a black screen.
Then I tried HDMI channel 3 – never used it before – and it worked perfectly well in 720p. The Asus gave a very crisp and sharp display.
Try other slots on the back of your TV!
Is it possible to connect transformer to my laptop and use transformer as my second display?
As far as I know the mini HDMI port on the Transformer is line-out only.

Ack… ty for all of this information.. lol. I was rushed into buying a new monitor (Samsung S24A300B). Salesperson didn’t say it didn’t have a HDMI connector until questioned directly~
Anyway.. I reluctantly brought the monitor home, & am still debating over whether to keep it xD
As I’d like to have multifunctional devices around, I think I will get another monitor! Your advice “fewer “mediums” between your Asus Transformer and an external monitor you have the better image and sound quality you get” has swayed my mind, lol
Is it correct to assume that ‘newer’ monitors all have HDMI connectors? I mean.. I heard it depended on whether the monitor had speakers by itself, but, well.. I’ve also heard that oddly, some monitors that did NOT have speakers had HDMI connectors anyway.
Melissa,
You can simply visually check if there is a HDMI port in the monitor body or not. If you buy it online, then read what other people say if it is not mentioned in the specs.
The presence of HDMI ports becomes more common today.
Hey there, I’m a newbie to all this and i have a question which i hope can be answered by one of your tech Gods!
I have the EEE Pad Transformer Prime and would like to connect a HD camera to it so i can watch the output through the ASUS.
Do you know if this is possible? Thanks,
Ops, sorry, haven’t tried that. What about video output cable?
Hi Don,
I have an Asus TF101 and a Toshiba REGZA TV. I recently went a bought a mini-HDMI cable on e-bay, and used it to connect the two devices.
The connection worked perfectly, until I tried to play a movie which I had downloaded using Google Play. The TV screen went blank (but the sound worked).
I then exited the movie and the TV screen was restored. I then tried to play the trailers which were on the screen – they played beautifully.
There are 3 HDMI inputs on the Toshiba. I tried them all with exactly the same result.
Do you have any idea of what causes this (quantity of data?) and is there anything I can do about it?
Regards,
Nick
